Monarchy on the move
Ferdinand III of Castile and León: Interactive maps
This interactive map provides a geographical overview of the Christian kingdoms and the Almohad Empire in the Iberian Peninsula from the accession of Ferdinand III to the throne of Castile (1217) until his death in 1252. Users can explore different historical regions, identified by specific colors, and click on markers representing places visited by the monarch, which display details such as the name, date, and geographic coordinates. Additionally, the map includes a heat map layer showing the frequency of visits to specific locations. Users can enable or disable a series of informational layers using controls on the interface. As you zoom in or out, markers for specific locations are automatically revealed or hidden, enhancing the navigation experience and allowing for a more dynamic view of the region’s history.
The side panel also allows you to filter locations by year or month; your selection is automatically reflected in the map view. You can also filter the monarch’s stays by the places where he awarded diplomas or paid visits. The “Reset” button allows you to restore all filters to their default settings.
Finally, you can select each year of the monarch’s reign and dynamically view the itineraries he followed during each annual cycle. A yellow dashed line indicates the routes taken by Ferdinand III, while a number next to each route indicates the order in which he completed the annual itinerary. We recommend using this tool after restoring the map to its original view. To remove the itinerary display, simply select a year with no actual movements.
